The East is Red:
Launching a Satellite

The East is red, the sun has risen.
Mao Zedong has appeared in China.
He is devoted to the people's happiness,
Hu-er-hai-yo,
He is the people's great savior.

The The East is Red first made the association between Mao Zedong and the sun in the 1940s. This song became increasingly prominent over the following decades, and during the Cultural Revolution it effectively replaced the National Anthem. The song even took on cosmic qualities: when China's first satellite — the "Dong Fang Hong I" — orbited the earth in 1970, it chimed the tune of The East is Red to the whole world.
